What Is AEO, and Why Should a Small Business Care?
Picture the counter guy at the local hardware store. You walk in and ask "who's a good plumber around here?" He doesn't hand you the phone book turned to the page for plumbers, no, he gives you ONE name. "Call Danny. Tell him I sent you." And you call Danny, because a trusted source just vouched for him.
That, in a nutshell, is what just happened to the whole internet.
You've heard of SEO which is getting your website to rank on Google. This used to be the 10 blue links. AEO is its new cousin, and it matters more every month. AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization (some folks also call it GEO, generative engine optimization, same animal). AEO is about showing up when somebody asks an AI a question and gets that ONE answer back.
Your customers are doing it right now. They ask ChatGPT, or Google's AI box, or their phone, "who builds websites for small businesses near me," and they get one short answer instead of a page of blue links. You must BE in that answer. You want to be Danny.
What is AEO, in plain terms?
SEO is about earning a spot in a list of links. AEO is about being the one answer the AI actually gives. When someone asks an AI assistant a question, it pulls from sources it trusts and writes one reply. AEO is the work of making sure your business is one of those trusted sources.
How is it different from SEO?
Here's the thing, they do overlap, but the scoreboard is different. With SEO, you win when you rank high enough in that list of links that somebody clicks yours. With AEO, you win when the AI names your business or uses your information in its answer, and a lot of the time the person never sees a list of links at all. As more people get their answers straight from AI, that becomes a bigger and bigger deal.
Why does this matter for a small business RIGHT NOW?
Because when there were ten blue links, there was room on page one for a bunch of businesses. When there's ONE answer, the clear, trustworthy, well-described businesses win, and everybody else just... disappears.
It happened to US. Our own site went from getting recommended by ChatGPT to not being mentioned at all, in about two months, without us changing a thing. Standing still was all it took. Getting in early matters, because the businesses being cited today are the ones the engines keep trusting tomorrow.
Great, so what actually helps you show up in AI answers?
- Plain content that answers real questions. Write the way people actually ask question. Use real questions as your headings and answer them straight. (This article is doing exactly that. Now you know why!)
- A clear, real story. AI likes specifics and genuine content over vague BS filler. "Committed to excellence" tells it nothing. "We've built websites since 1998" tells it something.
- FAQs on your pages, in a clean format. Question, answer, done. AI LOVES this.
- Structured data. This is all the behind-the-scenes code that tells the engines exactly what your business is, what you offer, and how to reach you. Invisible to your visitors, gold to the machines. (View the source of this page to see it!)
- Being one clearly named, consistent business everywhere on your site. If the machines can't tell who you are, they won't bet their answer on you.
Do you build this in?
Yes! Every site we build is made for both search engines and AI answer engines, from the way the pages are written to the structured data underneath. Baked in, not bolted on, ala WordPress.
But here's the part most folks miss. The structured data, the clean code, all that behind-the-scenes stuff... think of that as the delivery truck. The CONTENT is the cargo. The AI can only repeat what your site actually says, so if your pages are full of "committed to excellence" crap, the fanciest code can't save you.
That's exactly why we built our Tell Your Business Story service. We sit down with you for a 30-minute conversation, record it, and turn your real words into website content that sounds like YOU. Clear, specific, human. In other words, exactly the stuff AI engines trust enough to cite. It can work on the website you already have (no rebuild required), and it starts at $495.
That's the whole recipe. You can see the rest of what we do on our services page.

Common questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. It sits alongside it, and honestly they eat the same food: clear, honest, well-structured text and content. Do it right and you're feeding both.
Can I do AEO on a Wix or builder site?
Only so much. On a website builder you don't fully control the code, and that limits the structured data and fine-tuning AEO leans on. It's like tuning an engine you're not allowed to open.
Does my small business really need this?
More every month. Nobody can tell you the exact day the scale tips, but the sooner your site is set up to BE an answer, the better seat you've got when it does.
